United States School Holidays

In the United States, public and private schools observe the same school holidays. The academic year in the United States (K-12) is normally 180 school days long, although university years are shorter. Some school districts approve a number of anticipated snow days. If the actual number of cancelled days exceeds the scheduled number, the start of summer vacation may be altered to maintain the same duration of the school year.

School Holidays in the United States

All federal and state holidays, as well as cultural and religious holidays, are observed by all public and private schools in the United States.

Thanksgiving Weekend

This is typically observed on the fourth Thursday of November. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is also a holiday.

Christmas vacation

Most schools observe Christmas Eve as a holiday. As a result, there will be no classes. This respite normally lasts until January (New Year’s Day). Christmas is celebrated by gathering friends and family and exchanging gifts. Christmas is a holiday season commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Fall vacation

This is not practiced in every section of the country. Typically, fall break lasts a week or two in September or October.

Winter vacation

Winter break is often a week in February or March that includes President’s Day.

Spring vacation

Spring break is a week in March or April that includes Easter vacation.

Summer vacation

Summer vacation lasts 10-11 weeks (from May to August/June to Mid-August). Summer vacation varies by location and state.

Religious celebrations

Other religious holidays, like as Good Friday, Jewish holidays, and Islamic holidays, are also observed in some schools.

National Holiday

Independence Day is a national holiday observed on July 4th each year. The United States of America declared its independence from England on July 4, 1776.

Monday is Labor Day.

Labor Day is observed on September 3rd to remember the accomplishments of the American Labor Movement.
